Google named ”word of the decade”

Technology.am (Jan 14, 2010) — Google has been named the “word of the decade” by a grouping of American speech scholars.

In its yearly Word of the Year vote, the American Dialect Society (ADS) said that the word ‘tweet’, derived from sending a short message by means of Twitter (noun) and the act of sending such a message (verb) was the top word of 2009, reports the Telegraph.

The society said the usage of the word Google, a verb that means to “to explore the Internet”, came because just about everyone in the world uses the term nowadays.

The ADS chooses words for their current importance or notability in American English.

First real Symbian^4 screen shots emerge

We’d argue that the “wow” factor still isn’t there quite yet, but we’ll admit: Symbian^4 is clearly going to be a bit of a departure from the versions that came before it. The Symbian Foundation has posted the first handful of home screen UI shots on its developer wiki recently showing redesigned widgets, app categories and search, pop-up menus, and a standard-issue numeric touchscreen keypad — and unlike Nokia’s concept videos from before, these are from a real emulator running real code.

We knew this was eventually coming, and here it is: Google is giving everyone the heads-up that it just got a fresh batch of Nexus Ones in stock, and once they’ve been sold through, they’ll no longer be offered directly through the company’s online store. For what it’s worth, the customer service lines will stay open even after that happens — and you’ll still be able to buy a phone through KT in South Korea, Vodafone in Europe, and “possibly other [retailers] based on local market conditions” — but by and large, your average American is going to have a hard time getting one pretty shortly.

Google Broadband – Super-Fast Fiber Network

Google is planning to enter the U.S. market of broadband, a super-fast broadband network over optical fiber to offer data transfer rates via the Internet to 1 Gigabit per second (1 Gbps) or up to 100 times faster than currently available. The implementation will take place in the U.S., where Google has opened the nominations to the various affected areas to try first for this new network.

The intention is to bring a modern service and large bandwidth upto 1 Gbps to users at an affordable price. Bandwidth capacity has in fact an order of magnitude of 100 times that normally available to U.S. users today. Initially it will be an experiment, which will involved up to 500,000 users.
